Final sense of place

Sense of place is a place that you feel connected to, this place has a special meaning to you. Sense of place is our relationship with a place. In sense of place you have place connection which is having a strong bond or attachment to a place. There is also place meaning which is what a place means to you. This could include cultural, political, or historical meaning. Having sense of place means that this place gives you identity. Sense of place is determined by one's personal experiences, social interactions, and identities. How we perceive a place plays a huge role in sense of place. People perceive things differently because everyone is unique. People appreciate different aspects of an environment. People are influenced by how they interact with a place, what we value in a place, respect for others who live in our environment, and how we chose to better our environment.

A sense of place for me in the town of Salem is forest park. The park is right down the street from campus we went there one day on a field trip. I've been to the park a decent amount of times. The first time I went there was back in september with my friends we sat on the rocks and took in the scenery. One night my friends and I went to the park to set off fireworks, which was probably not one of our best ideas.  I feel connected to the park because it reminds me of home. On Cape Cod we have a lot of beaches and the beach is a huge sense of place for me. The park is right on the water and with my history and attachment to the beach it makes me feel at home. I feel connected to the park because it's a calm and relaxing place to be. Living on Cape Cod nature is huge to me, so being at the park brings back that connection and love for nature. Overall the park reminds me a lot of home and that is what makes me feel connected to it.

My sense of place on SSU campus is Peabody hall floor 1 where I live. The first floor of peabody is where all of my friends and I live. This floor is where I met some of my best friends in college. I spend most my time on this floor. Floor one is my home at school, it is where I live and spend all of my free time.  Floor one is a sense of place for me because of the social interactions I've had there. I met my friends Alexis and Vanessa while doing dishes in the bathroom. During the first floor meeting I saw my friend Eve who I had met during orientation. Living on floor one has made me the friends I have today. We are all so close because of living so close to each other we even have our own group chat. I feel a connection to peabody hall floor one because it is my home in Salem, even next year when I'm no longer living in peabody hall I will always remember it and feel a connection to it.

In september I had no idea where I was or my surroundings I hand't even been downtown yet. I also didn't have the same friend group I do now. I was just trying to find my way in Salem the town and school. Now I know the town of Salem and the school. I've grown up a lot since september too. I've learned to be more independent. I've had to become more responsible for my school work making sure I  do my homework and get good grades. I've also had to take care of myself. In four years from now I hope to be graduated from Salem State. I hope to start my career right out of college and be living on my own becoming an adult. I think my years at Salem State will prepare me for then and make me into the person I need to be.

Thanksgiving!

A thanksgiving tradition we have is my Dad makes meat stuffing. It's not usual stuffing but it's a tradition that's been in my family for years. My Dad always makes it the night before thanks giving. Meat stuffing consists of ground beef, bread stuffing, purayed vegetables, and bell seasoning. My Dad cooks it for about and hour and when it's ready I am the taste tester. I let him know if he needs to add anything or if it's good. This is one of my favorite family traditions.

I share thanksgiving with most of my family. We go to dinner at my Mom's sisters house. My Grandparents are there my aunty Cindy and Uncle Brian and their daughter Gracie, my aunt Tracy and then my parents brother and I. After dinner we go to my Dad's parents house. All of my Aunts and uncles are there and some of my cousins go too. There is a lot of us on my Dad side of the family.

The meaning of thanksgiving is to show and reflect on the things in life you are thankful for. I think it's a good time to reflect on all the good things in life and realize how lucky we are in life. I also think it's a good time to be with family. My family is very close and it's nice to all be together and show how thankful we are for each other.

Triad Experience

We went to Bertini's a family owned italian restaurant we chose it because it looked interesting and like a sense of place in salem. I went to dinner there and talked to the waitress about the project. I asked her the type of people that come in and why has the restaurant been open so long.

I learned that Bertini's is a family owned restaurant opened by Charles Bertini and his wife Ester. It was opened in 1943 and has been opened for over 70 years. Now their grandson runs the family business. The restaurant gives off a homey vibe. Everyone that works their is very friendly and kind, they make you feel like part of the family. This is why so many people have been going here for 70 years. Bertini's is a big sense of place for many people in Salem. One lady went there as a child with her parents and still continues to go. The restaurant gives you a sense of place and that is why it has lasted so many years.

This contributed to my sense of place because it made me feel more connected to Salem. I felt more like a local going there than I have anywhere else.

I chose to do my research paper on sense of place. I'm going to connect the restaurant to sense of place and how important it is.

sense of place at park

While in the park I noticed how interconnected everything is to each other. The trees and plants are connected to the animals and humans in the park because the trees give us oxygen to breath and we give them carbon dioxide. The ocean is also interconnected to the people in the park. The ocean feeds us with fish and other animals and also is a place for people to make money. I value the park because it is a nice place to go to be out doors. It is calm and peaceful and also pretty. By noticing how connected everything in the park is it has made me value it more. This park plays a role in my sense of place in Salem because it reminds me of home being close to the ocean. I also makes me feel more connected to nature being in the park. I liked taking the field trip to the park it was nice and peaceful to be outside. I liked the thirty minutes we had to just sit and take in everything around us. I found this a nice way to connect to your surroundings and appreciate it more. The only thing I did not like is having to draw a picture of what we saw and senses. It also got cold and made it hard to enjoy the field trip. I would like to do more field trips like this one I enjoyed being outside and found it very relaxing.

Library Reflection

The trip to the library was very informative and helpful. The location of the library contributes to sense of place because it overlooks this courtyard and all the other buildings on north campus. The way all the buildings kinda form a circle make it feel more connected. I learned from Jason that the library is a very useful resource on campus. The library has thousands of books and other sources to help you succeed. I learned that the library also is the perfect place to study and there are around a thousand seats in the library. Jason taught me a lot about research. He taught me how to find a creditable source and that the library can help get you almost any book even if they don't  have that book. I learned that map works helps you see how successful you are gonna be at Salem State. I also learned that it's a place where you can get help and has many resources for students.

The link above is to NOBLE the north of Boston library exchange. This is a group of libraries that share books between each other. I shared this link because it's a very helpful source when writing a research paper. Personally I have a lot of research papers I have to write and I know that I'll be using NOBLE as a source to help me write my paper.

National Park Field Trip

On the trip to the National Park I learned a lot about Salem's history. I learned about how important trade and maritime was to the city. The customs in Salem was a huge part of the economy. Hundreds of boats would come in bringing all sorts of goods. The government made a lot of money from taxing these goods that came in. As time went on trade was not as popular but the industrial revolution was becoming popular. Soon many factories were built these factories attracted immigrants many from Poland. Salem is a city full of history the field trip taught me a lot about the history of Salem.

This experience contributed to my sense of place. I learned a lot about Salem and it's history. Learning all of this made me feel more connected to the city. I also felt more connected being close to the water. I'm from cape cod so I'm always near water, and today it made me feel more connected.

Farmers Market

Maitland Farm
I met with Andy from Maitland Farm. The farmers market was smaller than I though it was going to be, but I thought it was cool. Maitland is a 2 1/2 acre farm. The farm is run by Andy his wife and father in law. I asked Andy why did they want to stay in Salem he told me because the land has been in the family for awhile and Salem is home to them.  I also asked him why he loved being a farmer he told me it's because he feels a responsibility to support local agriculture. Going to the farmers market and meeting Andy made me feel more connected to Salem. Also hearing about Andy's sense of place helped me realize mine.
